Crap… I’m in Ontario OR tonight and it looks like my quest to be a Grand Finisher is over, per the news and a check of the Idaho DOT web site… HWY 21 closed and Stanley on warning to evacuate.
I was planning to do GT21 and GT23 with a night in Stanley… I’m probably going to bag it and simply ride towards home via GT 24 and GT 30 – I have a nephew in Enis MT so that was going to be a celebratory stop.. I’ll enjoy my visit, and the ride thus far has been exceptional but GT’2 21,22, & 23 will not get a visit by me this year.
I also got to experience something I have never ridden in my lifetime of riding – a absolute zero visibility sand storm after I left the Owyhee dam… glad I was down off the road up, but MAN – I had to stop dead in my lane twice…I could not see at all, even my GPS and windshield where gone for a few seconds… very wild. When I got the to hotel the dust/sand had encroached on “everything” – some even got though my ‘stich – so freaking wild. I road about 20 miles in some wild blowing sand and tumble weeds…
I sure hope the Mountain View Resort is fair and refunds my “nonrefundable” room.
Needless to say I am bummed, but wild fires are what they are, I’ve been nervous that they could be a Grand Finisher ride killer since I life Minnesota. So it goes…
Best regards, Jim
